about

This summer I wanted to record my acoustic guitar in a private setting that is meaningful to me. Out to my family's summer place I went! Now, this is a modest place in the middle of the woods beside a lake. I loaned a zoom recorder from my friend. I recorded inside the small cottage ("Tupa"), on the porch ("Kuisti"), in the sauna, and finally on the small dock ("Laituri") by the lake. All the tracks here are presented in the same order I recorded them. There was no mixing or mastering, because there really was no need.

The weather was a bit rainy every now and then, so it added to the background sounds. Inside the cottage there is a clock, which is like a metronome, and you can hear the nature sounds through the open windows, though they may be less audible on the recordings. On the porch you can hear the nature more clearly, as well as the wind, which sometimes distorts the sound, but I didn't let it bother me that much. (There were also occasional volume peaks, but nothing to really worry about.) I also tried to avoid the sound of occasional motor boats passing by. In the end of "Kuisti III" you can actually hear one approaching from the distance just before the end of the recording. Inside the sauna I lit up the sauna stove ("kiuas" in Finnish) and played next to the sound of the starting fire. On "Sauna II" you can clearly hear the sound of an Arctic loon (a bird, "Kuikka" in Finnish) coming from the lake. During the recording of "Tupa III" there was hard rain outside, hitting the roof loudly. There was also a sudden burst of wind, as I had placed the recorder in-between the open windows, but luckily this did not ruin the recording, even this time! In the end of the track I put my guitar aside, walked to the door and opened it, listened to the rain for a moment, and then pressed stop. The final track was recorded outside on the dock. Of course it was windy again, and I didn't have any protection for the mics. However, rather that annoying, I find the distortion caused by the wind amusing. It is almost noise music! You can also hear the sound of a distant train in the background.

Every track was improvised on the spot, influenced by the surroundings and my state of mind at that moment.

Aïr Kouvola, Finland

Aïr started as a guitar & drums freeform experimental & noise duo in 1996, publishing a 7" (aareton-label) in the process. Gradually it evolved into a quartet, taking influence from Japanese psychedelic underground free rock and krautrock among other styles, made some gigs and recorded sounds around the millenium. At some point other things took over, and the band graduallly came to a halt. ... more
