about

This is my first studio effort improvising with an acoustic guitar, solo. I've been experimenting to find my own style, or road, for many years. My playing and improvising is all based on intuition and perception, and the technique I have, which is not perfect, is A technique none the less. When I'm playing this stuff, I want to feel the music as well, through my fingers, hands, body and heart, as well as brain, and hear it with my ears at the same time. For this, I think the nylon stringed acoustic suits me the best, because I love the feel and the sound of the strings. I also see the guitar as a whole, and especially love the guitar I have always been playing.

When I start playing, it's a road that leads somewhere. When I choose a direction, afterwards it always feels like the only direction I could have taken, but of course I'm just fooling myself. It all requires the right mood, and a kind of peaceful state of mind. Whatever the case, I'm very satisfied with these recordings.

I didn't have any images in my mind when I started to play these tunes. So I thought that there is no point in coming up with separate titles for them. Everything was created and recorded in about an hour. I just started with different approaches (silent, loud, riff, chord - whatever) and went on from there

Markku adjusted the mikes perfectly, and left me to do the recording alone. The sound is very natural, and whenever I listen to these tunes, I can imagine that I'm back in that studio room. If one listens very closely, one can hear a train passing by - the studio is located next to a railroad track. For me this was no problem. At some point I realised that there was a strange effect audible in the most silent parts. I thought nevermind, I will finish the recording anyway. Apparently the so called noise gate effect had been accidentally left on. For me it does not ruin the recording, but adds some funny curiosity to the mix.

Thus also the title of the record: the Gate.

about

Aïr Kouvola, Finland

Aïr started as a guitar & drums freeform experimental & noise duo in 1996, publishing a 7" (aareton-label) in the process. Gradually it evolved into a quartet, taking influence from Japanese psychedelic underground free rock and krautrock among other styles, made some gigs and recorded sounds around the millenium. At some point other things took over, and the band graduallly came to a halt. ... more
